The Debate Continues

Responding to the 90% of NC residents who support background checks for all gun purchases we hear:

"It just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense."

Maybe this will help:

When the system works properly, background checks keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has blocked more than two million illegal transactions over the past two decades.

Makes perfect sense to me.

  1. But what happens to those people that get blocked? According to CNN..

"In 2009, the FBI reported 71,000 instances of people lying on their background checks to buy guns. But the Justice Department prosecuted just 77 cases -- that's about 1/10th of 1%. A lack of follow through from the federal government is letting these gun criminals walk, and that sends a message about lack of enforcement that only encourages systematic disrespect for existing gun laws."

Two million illegal transactions.. how many were prosecuted?

What gun purchases don't require a background check in NC? Does the 'gun show loophole' I've heard so much about allow me to purchase a handgun at a gun show without a background check?

Thank you for reading.. hope you're enjoying this wonderful weather.

  2. I agree with Mr Avlon, lack of prosecution is an issue.
